Rs. 76 billion spent so far on COVID Vaccine imports

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Government has spent Rs. 76 billion this year alone to import COVID-19 vaccines, says State Pharmaceuticals Corporation Chairman Dr. Prasanna Gunasena.

Dr. Gunasena was speaking at the Special Committee on COVID-19 Prevention meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat under the chairmanship of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Dr. Gunasena had said that Europe and the United States are already ordering vaccines for 2022 and 2023 and that those countries may be planning for any future eventuality such as needing more than two doses of the vaccine to control the disease.

At present, the Committee is focusing on including information on all those who have been vaccinated and to issue an internationally recognised certificate on COVID vaccination.
