Petition filed for Mayor of Kurunegala’s arrest

UTV | COLOMBO – Trade union leader Namal Karunaratne has filed a writ petition seeking an order to arrest the Mayor of Kurunegala over the demolition of the 13th Century King’s Court building in Kurunegala.

The writ petition was filed before the Court of Appeal this morning, requesting court to issue an order to the Acting Inspector General of Police and the Officer-in-Charge of Kurunegala to apprehend the Kurunegala Mayor over the incident.

The Kurunegala Mayor is accused of ordering the demolition of the building for road expansion activities.

Several political and civil society groups have also urged the government to take action against persons who are responsible for the demolition of the building.

The Prime Minister also received a report compiled by an expert committee pertaining to the incident.
