Committee appointed to probe gas leak explosions says their mandate is limited

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Head of the committee appointed by the President to investigate recent gas leak explosions says their mandate is limited to investigating and compiling a report adding they have no powers to monitor whether their recommendations are in fact being implemented.

The committee has already compiled the report and is expecting an appointment to hand over the report to the President.

The Chairman of the committee, Prof. Shantha Walpola of the University of Moratuwa said they have no powers to monitor the implementation of the recommendations included in the report.

He said they compiled the report after statements were recorded from 40 factions including gas companies, the officials attached to the Sri Lanka Standards Institution and consumers.
