Cardinal will not attend the 74th Independence Day state ceremony

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has decided not to attend the state function of the 74th Independence Day celebrations tomorrow.

Speaking at a media briefing today, Reverend Father Cyril Gamini said the afternoon mass that was scheduled to be held at the All Saints’ Church in Borella in view of Independence Day was also cancelled by the Cardinal.

Reverend Father Gamini said following the discovery of a hand grenade recently and the lack of progress in investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith reached the decisions.

The Reverend Father said all other churches will hold services, as they have done in previous years to invoke blessings on the country.

He noted that the Cardinal will hold a mass despite not attending the state function tomorrow.
