(UTV | COLOMBO) – Army-groomed athletes who stood out in the world of international sports were invited yesterday, September 20, to the Commander’s office at Army HQ to receive heartfelt congratulations and financial rewards.
After meeting the athletes who made the Army and the nation famous, the Army Commander praised each athlete’s accomplishments and spoke with them in front of the Army Director of Sports.
Among those who excelled internationally were Sergeant M.M. Theekshana, a well-known Sri Lankan Army cricket player who was a member of the team that won the 2022 Asia Cup Championship; Corporals T.T. Algama, K.B.Y. De Silva, and M.A.I.J. Perera, who were all members of the 2022 Sri Lankan National Netball team that won the 2022 Asian Netball Championship; and Corporal R.A.D.
In an effort to encourage them further, the Army Chief simultaneously gave the appropriate authorities the order to elevate the aforementioned achievers in rank in appreciation of their accomplishments.
As a result, on the same day that Private M.M. Theekshana received his promotion to Sergeant, Private T.T. Algama received his promotion to Corporal, Private K.B.Y. De Silva received his promotion to Corporal, and Private M.A.I.J. Perera received his promotion to Corporal.
The Army Commander presented financial incentives to Sergeant M.M. Theekshana, the members of the netball team, and bodybuilder Lance Corporal R.A.D.P. Rajapaksha after praising their efforts on a global scale and wishing them luck in the future.
During the brief event, Brigadier KAWNH Bandaranayake USP, Director, Army Sports, Major General WASS Wanasinghe RSP USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces Mullaittivu, Major General WBSM Abeysekera RSP USP, Director General Financial Management, and others were present.
