‘Country is facing numerous issues due to destruction of democracy’

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says numerous issues Sri Lanka is faced with before the international community are not related to the conflict, but the destruction of democracy.

The SJB said the government must take prompt steps to prevent the country from becoming categorised as a country that does not respect and uphold democracy.

Speaking during a media briefing, Parliamentarian Imthiaz Bakeer Markar said democracy and human rights are highly regarded in a civilised world.

MP Markar said all issues raised by the UN Human Rights Commissioner are existing issues in the country that relate to the oppression of the rights of citizens. He said these concerns cannot be disregarded through patriotism.

Furthermore, MP Marker said the government must direct its attention to matters highlighted at the UNHRC pertaining to the treatment of social activists who have been treated unfairly by court.

The Parliamentarian said many political and social activists were unfairly detained.
