Retired HC Judge to conduct independent probe into Prison Fiasco

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Sri Lankan government has decided to appoint a retired judge to conduct an independent investigation with regard to the recent incidents at the Welikada and Anuradhapura Prisons, involving State Minister Lohan Ratwatte.

This was confirmed by Cabinet Spokesperson & Minister, Dullas Alahapperuma on Wednesday (22).

At the same time, Justice Minister Ali Sabry told Parliament on Wednesday (22) that the incidents at the Welikada and Anuradhapura Prisons should never have taken place, and those incidents should be condemned and it was a disgrace.

He also confirmed that a retired High Court judge will be appointed to conduct an independent investigation with regard to the said incidents.

The Justice Minister said the CID, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, and the Victims and Witness Protection Authority have commenced investigations.

The Victims and Witness Protection Authority has also taken measures to ensure the safety, security, and dignity of the detainees and prisoners, as the government has a responsibility to ensure their safety.
