(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Prisons Department has taken measures to pardon and release 89 prisoners in commemoration of Prisoners’ Day.
Former parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake’s name is not among them.
Two women were among those released. Prisoners’ Day was 12 September.
10 from Mahara prison, five from Welikada and two from Negombo are among those chosen for pardon. The chosen prisoners were not linked to drug smuggling, organised crime, rape, or any of the 27 serious crimes.
Prisons Commissioner/spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said detainees who were unable to pay their fines for minor crimes were also among the pardoned.
