“Hobbs & Shaw” take box-office crown

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The “Fast and Furious” franchise once again reigns supreme at the box-office, the first spin-off feature “Hobbs and Shaw” opening this weekend with a $60.8 million domestic debut. The Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham-led spin-off is expected to do even better overseas with a further $120 million from international markets.

Critics were fairly positive (67% on Rotten Tomatoes), fans are loving it though with an A- CinemaScore and a 90% audience rating on RT. Boasting a large $200 million budget though, the film will require good legs in order to make a profit.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” held well in its second weekend, coming in third with $20 million and a 51% decline – not bad. Disney’s “The Lion King” slipped to second with a solid $38 million and has now amassed $430 million in North America and $1.196 billion internationally.

On the limited release front, “The Farewell” expanded and cracked the Top Ten with $2.4 million in seventh place. Psycho-thriller “Luce” snagged a $26,583 per-theatre average, while “The Nightingale” took a $20,041 opening per screen.
