Committee probing Easter attacks to submit report by 10 June

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The special committee appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena to look into events that led to the Easter Sunday attacks says they will submit its report to the President before the 10th of June.

A member of the committee, Former Ministerial Secretary Padmasiri Jayamanne, speaking to a prominent online news portal said the consultation of evidence has been completed.

He said the final report is being compiled based on the analysis of the evidence accounts.

President Maithripala appointed the investigative body on the 22nd of April, to probe the causes and background which led to the April 21st attacks.

The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Judge Vijith Malalgoda, while other members include retired Inspector General of Police NK Illangakoon and former Ministry Secretary Padmasiri Jayamanne.

The committee recorded witness counts from IGP Pujith Jayasundara who was sent on compulsory leave, former Secretary of Defence Hemasiri Fernando and scores of other defence officials during over the course of its term.

President Maithripala Sirisena speaking earlier during a meeting with top security officials said after receiving the report of the three-member committee, the content of the report will subsequently be opened for all parties.

The President noted that after receiving the report, it will be presented before Parliament and future security measures will be taken accordingly. (NR)
