“Underworld will be wiped out promptly” – IGP

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara says the underworld and its activities will be eradicated and wiped out promptly.

Speaking to media in Vavuniya, IGP Jayasundara said the Police Special Task Force (STF) will be directed to eradicate underworld activities.

The IGP said operations have been launched according to the law.

He noted steps are being taken in order to arrest criminals, however he added that all steps were being carried out legally, void of any illegal activity, alongside Police officers and intelligence services.

The IGP also stated the Special Task Force will be deployed for this purpose.

IGP Jayasundara said all officers must not be afraid to step up and do their duty as there are legal steps pertaining to all matters.

The IGP reiterated the Police are effective and active, adding there is no room for criminals and underworld figures to run amok.

IGP Pujith Jayasundara also commented on the Kalutara prison bus shooting reported last week. IGP Jayasundara said several shortcomings were identified at the incident.

However, he said a joint effort will be taken to avoid such incidents in the future.

IGP Pujith Jayasundara said the prisons officers were trained to use automatic weapons.

He noted it was reported that the suspects were wearing police uniforms.

However the IGP stated no matter who or what uniform suspects may have been wearing, if they attacked anyone the issue could not be laid solely on the uniform itself.

He noted if an additional vehicle was also part of the escort action should have been taken.

IGP Jayasundara said accordingly shortcomings exist, however he added fingers will not be pointed at anyone.

The IGP said he had personally spoken to the Commissioner General of Prisons, further stating a plan regarding the matter has at present been formulated.
