(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says information has been uncovered pertaining to a racket where firearms used by the LTTE during the conflict are being sold to underworld gangs.
Speaking at a function in Maharagama the Minister said the police have launched extensive investigations into the discovery.
Minister Ranawaka added the underworld that was previously focused on drug peddling is now taking up contracts of sand and rock mining.
He expressed his shock at the Kalutara incident where the shooting was carried out in broad daylight.
The Minister questioned as to where the group obtained the firearms from.
Recalling incidents from 30 years ago Minister Ranawaka said during the uprising in the past, people were murdered along streets and T56 firearms were taken from army camps.
He raised concerns that weapons used in the conflict with the LTTE are now being sold across the island.
