“No Confidence Motion against Premier Rajapaksa passed with majority,” Champika, Harsha says [UPDATE]

(UTV|COLOMBO) – UPDATE: Parliamentarian Champika Ranawaka stated that the Opposition has passed the No-Confidence Motion for the second time with majority against President Maithripala Sirisena’s appointee for Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Cabinet of Ministers on Friday (16).

Parliamentarian Harsha de Silva also tweeted stating that “Mahinda Rajapaksa lost the confidence vote for the third time just now.”

Accordingly, the No-Confidence Motion against Rajapaksa and the Cabinet of Ministers, reportedly passed in Parliament with an Amendment today.

The vote on the No-Confidence Motion was taken after an agreement was reached with President Sirisena on Thursday (15) to remove Clause 01 of the original motion which was submitted by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) this week.

The agreement was also to conduct the vote using the electronic voting system or to call by name, however the electronic voting system or a vote by name could not be conducted as a tense situation arose in Parliament with Government Parliamentarians protesting and occupying the Speaker’s seat.

Thereby, a voice vote was taken for the second time and the No-Confidence Motion was passed, it is learnt.
