Capsized boat brought to Beruwela; 4 persons including 2 children still missing

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The boat which capsized in the seas of Kalutara- Katukurunda was brought to the Beruwela fishing harbour last night (20th Monday).

It has been reported that the boat was recovered with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN).

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) noted that search operations have recommenced with the hope of locating 2 children, a woman and a man that have been reported missing.

The Beruwela and Payagala police received complaints yesterday regarding the missing persons.

Meanwhile, police have recorded statements with officers of the coastguard and area residents regarding the accident.

A multiday trawler with 35 passengers aboard capsized during the annual St. Lazarus boat procession.

Eleven individuals were killed, 27 others are currently receiving treatment at the Beruwela and Kalutara- Nagoda hospitals. 4

Meanwhile, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera took measures to temporally suspend the fishing licenses of the boat which capsized.

The minister noted that boat licenses will be cancelled if they failed to comply with ministry rules and regulations.
