Lanka Premier League to be postponed to next year

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board which was set to host the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in August this year is set to be postponed, the Pakistan Observer reported.

According to the highly placed sources in Colombo, the announcement will be made soon and the new dates will be announced at a later date.

“LPL is not called off for ever but will be rescheduled”, the source said.

“In the current uncertain prevailing situation at SLC, it can’t be held in August and not before the elections are held. There is no window at a later date in this year and therefore will be shifted to next year”, the source added.

Only few days ago, the Competent Authority (CA) Kamal Pathamasiri had reportedly confirmed that he would ask the officials to prepare a budget for this LPL

Russel Arnold continues to be the Director of the Tournament.

In the meantime, few former SLC Presidents, who had written a letter to the Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha to appoint an Interim Committee were invited by the Minister at his Office on Wednesday afternoon (04).

Out of seven invitees, (Jayantha Dharmadasa, Sidath Wettimuny, Upali Dharmadasa, Arjuna Ranatunga, Reinzie Wijetilleke, Ana Punchihewa and Wijaya Malasekara), Wijaya being overseas could not honour the invitation.

“There is no leader among us”, Sidath Wettiminy, speaking exclusively before going for the meeting, said. “I shall be pressing for the new constitution”, he said.

Wettimuny, who has played 23 Tests and 35 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), was a Chairman of the Interim Committee and is a strong voice in appealing for the change in sports laws and constitutions.
