Over 1 million affected due to drought – DMC

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) says over 1 million persons have been affected as a result of the prevailing drought conditions in the country.

Assistant Director of the DMC Pradeep Kodippili said the centre is taking all necessary steps to supply all basic needs to those affected.

Kodippili said 1,041,690 persons belonging to 251,000 families have been affected so far by the prevailing drought conditions adding that the DMC and all affiliated ministries and departments are taking necessary steps to provide those affected with the assistance they require.

The Assistant Director said parallel to supplying drinking water the DMC has initiated programs with other parties engaged in agriculture, irrigation, electricity and water to provide assistance to those affected.

He added the DMC has taken steps to ensure all district DMC centres are used as supply centres.
