(UTV | COLOMBO) – President Ranil Wickremesinghe says by molding one’s life in accordance with the teaching of Prophet Muhammad, one can achieve success not only spiritually but also socially.
The birthday of the Prophet Muhammad who is venerated by the Sri Lankan Muslims as well as the Muslim brethren around the world is celebrated today.
Issuing a message to mark Milad-un-Nabi, President Wickremesinghe said it is his belief that doctrine of Prophet Muhammad as the religious leader of the Islamic devotees around the world will help to alleviate the situation in the society today more than ever before.
The President said, to live with the qualities that Prophet Muhammad preached and deal with others with a sense of understanding is a tribute to him rather than attempting to overcome them.
In his Milad-un-Nabi message, President Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that the coming of the Prophet Muhammad and his vision signified the protection of the entire human community as well as their respect.
President Wickremesinghe said he is hopeful that the birthday of Prophet Muhammad who was also called Al-Amin or ‘the trusted one’ will lead to spiritual and social progress and peace of all the nations including the Sri Lankan Muslims and Muslim brethren around the world.
Milad-un-Nabi or Eid-e-Milad is commemorated today to mark the occasion of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.
The festival is observed by Muslims in Sri Lanka and across the world.
Milad-un-Nabi is marked on the 12th Rabi’ ul-Awwal, which is the third month of the Islamic calendar.
The birth date of Prophet Muhammad is also known as Mawlid.
The word, which is derived from Arabic, translates to birth in English.
The origin of celebrating Milad-un-Nabi can be traced back to the early days of Islam when people used to gather and read verses to honour the prophet.
The life of Prophet Muhammad and his teachings, as reflected in the Hadith, have influenced many across the world.
Milad-un-Nabi serves as an opportunity for people of the Muslim community to remember and honour Prophet Muhammad’s life and what he stood for.
The celebrations and rituals of Milad-un-Nabi usually involve beautifying mosques, streets, and residential areas with colourful artificial lighting.
People also take out large processions remembering Prophet Muhammad and also distribute meals for the community.
A number of events have been organized in view of Milad-un-Nabi across the country as well.
