(UTV | AMERICA) – The long-gestating screen adaptation of the renowned dystopian “BioShock” video game franchise is moving forward again at Netflix.
“Constantine,” “I Am Legend,” and “Red Sparrow” helmer Francis Lawrence has come onboard to direct whilst Michael Green (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Logan”) has been hired to adapt the script for the live-action film for the streamer.
Lawrence is currently filming “The Hunger Games” prequel film, with the plan being for Green to adapt the script whilst that’s happening. Once Lawrence has wrapped production on the said prequel, he can jump straight into pre-production on “BioShock”.
First released in 2007 by 2K Games, the first two games were set in the 1960s in the Art Deco stylings of the undersea city of Rapture – a fallen scientific utopia consumed years before by its own ambitions and now the dominion of crazed genetic experiments.
The third was set in the 1910s in the Neoclassical-styled sky city of Columbia, a society founded on theocratic megalomania, fueled by religious dogma, and riddled with issues of bigotry, inequality and corruption.
The award-winning franchise, first introduced by 2K in 2007, has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide across its three titles and their various editions and collections.
Netflix announced in February that they were partnering with Take-Two Interactive to produce a “BioShock” film. Roy Lee will produce.
