No impact on power supply due to N’Cholai generator shutdown

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday said the temporary shutdown of a generator at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant would not affect round the clock electricity generation as hydro power generation has improved with the recent heavy rains. CEB Chairman Eng. Vijitha Herath said the shutdown of Generator 3 at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant was for a planned maintenance operation.

“The electricity demand has reduced due to the travel restrictions in place in the country. The country also received sufficient rainfall in the last couple of weeks. Therefore, the shutdown of a generator at Norochcholai will not impact the daily electricity supply,” he told the media. As at Thursday, 16.32 GWh had been generated from hydropower, and this was 56 percent of the total daily electricity supply. Thermal coal energy contribution stood at 36 percent and wind power contribution was at 7 percent.
