“Country being developed while facing COVID-19” – Namal Rajapakse

UTV | COLOMBO – Former Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa says development activities are continuing in the country while measures being taken to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Speaking during a public gathering in Galle, Former MP Rajapaksa said due to policies of the previous good governance government, Sri Lanka’s economy has slowed down.

He said people are of the view and hope that the country must be developed after the past 5 years of destruction, adding the country which was the fastest developing nation in the world, became the country with the weakest economy when Mahinda Rajapaksa handed the reigns over to Maithripala Sirisena.

Therefore he noted that Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to take on leadership of the country when it was at its lowest point economically.

On the other hand Namal Rajapaksa said the public have become debtors and are struggling while facing grave economic challenges, due the previous government failures.

He stressed Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been President for 8 months but over half of his term thus far has been facing the COVID-19 pandemic.

However the former MP said the government has begun developing the country, whilst mitigating the threat of the virus.

Former MP Namal Rajapaksa added that previous government did not have a practical economic model other than selling state resources to various nations.

He said the former government sold the Hambantota Port and the Colombo East Terminal, but the election was held before they could sell anything in Galle, charging that if it wasn’t for the Presidential election the Galle harbour would also have been sold.

Therefore Rajapaksa said the need for a group that can develop the country and enact both Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa’s policies must be sent to Parliament.

He stressed that the government faction pledges to take on the responsibility of developing the Galle district, which is the centre point of the South.
