Election observers to monitor social media

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Election watchdog, the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections has decided to deploy a special team to monitor posts and publications related to the 2020 General Election, on social media platforms.

Special attention will be given to hate speech, misinformation, fabrication of statements and the use of religious and racial materials for campaigning.

The PAFFREL organisation said concerned posts will be analysed by the attorney before being directed to the National Election Commission.

The PAFFREL organisation said following the observation of the Election Commission such posts will be directed to Facebook Inc.

The organisation said that Facebook has agreed to act on such matters promptly.

Meanwhile, PAFFREL organisation has commenced training 3,000 observers to be deployed as monitors on the Election Day.

200 mobile teams consisting of 1,000 observers will also be deployed to monitor the 2020 General Election.

The PAFFREL organisation has announced that it will deploy 5,000 observers to monitor the 2020 General Election.
