(UTV | COLOMBO) – Specialist Dr. Kularatne of the Kandy General Hospital says there is a risk of rat fever spreading due to the prevailing inclement weather.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kandy Dr. Kularatne said failure to identify symptoms and seek medical attention could also lead to death.
Dr. Kularatne said the disease is most common in the Ratnapura and Galle Districts, adding however it is prevalent in other parts of the country as well.
He noted 90% of those who contract the disease recover.
He said the disease is caused by bacteria which usually exists in rats, cows and pigs, comes in contact with humans due to contamination with water and soil from the animal’s urine.
Dr. Kularatne said the bacteria could live in water for around 16 days and in soil for around 24 days.
He added several persons engaged in horticulture and other plantations at present, and therefore said the risk of the disease spreading has increased further.
He said the bacteria enters humans through wounds, or if it comes in contact with the mouth or eyes.
Dr. Kularatne said symptoms will generally be visible with five to 14 days. He said one of the main symptoms is fever, severe muscle pains, headaches, changes in urine, red or yellowish eyes, vomiting and purging.
