“Attempts to sabotage SJB opening event afoot” – Sajith Premadasa

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa charges a certain faction is attempting to sabotage the opening ceremony for the establishment of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya alliance.

Speaking at a public rally in Homagama MP Premadasa claimed United National Party Provincial Council representatives have received telephone calls informing them to refrain from attending the opening ceremony.

He said once the Working Committee handed over the responsibility, he did not proceed to act like a political puppet or a figurehead and therefore began to work.

Accordingly the MP said this opening event will be held at 9am at the Nelum Pokuna on Monday the 2nd of March.

However he remarked that it saddened him to say that opposing forces are at work at present and attempting to mislead people to attending the event at a wrong location.

He therefore stressed Provincial Council MPs should not be afraid to receive calls in this regard, adding he will take responsibility for all MP posts and no one can dismiss them so easily simply because they attended and event at the Nelum Pokuna.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa also expressed his views on the statement made by Minister of Foreign Relations Dinesh Gunawardena at the 43rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He stressed the present government came to power on the back of statement in which they openly said the foremost place that belongs to the Sinhala/Buddhist will be ensured in a Sinhala/Buddhist country.

MP Premadasa said there was nothing wrong with this statement, however he noted there was never any mention of multi racial, multi religious, multi language and multi cultural issues.

He said they only focused on the Sinhala/Buddhist factor. However the Opposition Leader said people who only mentioned the Sinhalese are now going to Geneva and speaking differently.

He said the words used by Dinesh Gunawardena were never uttered during the election period.

MP Premadasa meanwhile stressed that regardless of who makes what statement, he is and remains the Chairman of the nominations board.

Meanwhile MP Sajith Premadasa also explained which districts he would contest from at the upcoming General Election. He said he would contest alongside MP Patali Champika Ranawaka and the group from Colombo.
