Weligama UC Chairman removed on instructions of Supreme Court

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The United National Party today said the decision by the Election Commission to remove the Weligama UC Chairman Rehaan Jayawickreme from his post was carried out on the instructions of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.

In a statement the UNP said it had initiated disciplinary action against several members for failing to adhere to the Constitution of the Party and these members later challenged the disciplinary action in the court of law.

The courts subsequently ruled against these members and instructed the Election Commission to remove them from their positions, the UNP said, following allegations that Jayawickreme was removed from the position under the instructions of the UNP.
