Russell Crowe joins “The Pope’s Exorcist”

(UTV | NEW ZEALAND) – Russell Crowe is set to star in the Screen Gems supernatural thriller “The Pope’s Exorcist” which hails from “Overlord” director Julius Avery.

Crowe will portray the real-life figure of Father Gabriele Amorth, a priest who acted as the chief exorcist of the Vatican and apparently performed over 100,000 exorcisms in his lifetime.

Amorth wrote two memoirs, “An Exorcist Tells His Story” and “An Exorcist: More Stories,” which deal with his experiences battling Satan and demons.

Doug Belgrad, Michael Patrick Kaczmarek, Eddie Siebert and Jeff Katz will produce. Filming aims to begin in September in Ireland.
