New fuel operation system for SLTB buses

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister of Passenger Transport Management Mahinda Amaraweera says a new ‘fuel operation system’ will be introduced in a bid to minimise the fuel wastage in Sri Lanka Transport Board buses.

The Ministry is also intending on training all drivers on the technical ‘know-how’ through experts, in order to improve the fuel efficiency in SLTB buses.

The Ministry in a statement said a number of environment-friendly programmes will also be launched in the near future.

Programmes will be launched at all 107 SLTB depots in the country.

Subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has issued the instructions to the SLTB Chairman, Kingsley Ranawaka today.

At present, 5,400 SLTB buses are in operation island-wide.

According to the Ministry, Rs. 375,000 is spent on fuel for SLTB buses, daily.

The Ministry of Passenger Transport Management said 50% of the daily revenue of the SLTB is spent on fuel.

A number of discrepancies have also been observed by the Ministry that prompted the government to launch new programmes.
