President extends term of Navy commander

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – President Maithripala Sirisena extended the term of Ravindra Wijegunaratne, the Navy Commander Vice Admiral, for six months. He was appointed in July 2015 and his term was to expire tomorrow (23rd Thursday)

Ravindra Wijegunaratne joined the Sri Lankan Navy in November 1980 as an officer cadet of the 9th Intake. Later he formed the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), the special force of the Navy. He also led a number of SBS operations, including the famous amphibious ‘Pooneryn Operation’ in 1993.
