Parliament to elect Deputy Speaker today

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The members of Parliament will today (05) appoint a new Deputy Speaker of House following the recent resignation of Thilanga Sumathipala from the post.

Accordingly, a secret vote will be taken up in Parliament to elect a Deputy Speaker. The Parliamentary session is scheduled to convene at 1.00 this afternoon.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has proposed the name of National List Parliamentarian Angajan Ramanathan, while the United National Party (UNP) has proposed Monaragala District Parliamentarian Ananda Kumarasiri for the Deputy Speaker post.

The Joint Opposition (JO) has decided to propose the name of Gampaha District Parliamentarian Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle.
