(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – President Maithripala Sirisena is due to appoint a committee of experts to consult relevant stakeholders of the controversy surrounding the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine or SAITM.
The President on his official twitter handle said the expert committee is expected to consult all parties and advise the government on further steps pertaining to SAITM.
The Head of State engaged in a special discussion with members of the Government Medical Officers Association this morning at the Presidential Secretariat.
During the meeting the GMOA and the Sri Lanka Dental Association tabled their proposals regarding the SATIM controversy.
The GMOA and the SLDA have strongly opposed SAITM for several years claiming their medical degrees cannot be accepted as legal.
However the Court of Appeal last month determined that students who obtain medical degrees at SAITM are eligible to register with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
The GMOA and President Sirisena are said to have extensively discussed the matter.
Members of the Executive Council and Central Committee of the GMOA were part of the discussion.
