Police investigate against 21 hate-speech cases

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Police have received nearly 21 complaints on incidents of destroying reconciliation among religions and nationalities in the country, Police Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Priyantha Jayakody said.

Responding to journalists on Wednesday (21) at the weekly Cabinet press briefing, the DIG stated that most of these complaints have been received regarding statements made to the media by some well known figures. He assured that investigations are being conducted into all these complaints by the Organised Crimes Investigation Division and the final decision will be taken on the advice of Attorney General (AG).

In addition to these incidents of hate speech, about 14 criminal activities such as setting fire to business places and attacking places of religious worship have been reported from 16th May to 20th June 2017 and 15 people have been arrested in connection with these cases, he added.

Legal action will be taken against them under Section 3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act, No. 56 0F 2007, he further stressed.
