Two local government council members elected under the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) ticket have been suspended from the party for acting in contradiction to party directives, according to the party’s General Secretary, S. Subairdeen.
In a statement, Mr. Subairdeen said that disciplinary action has been initiated against M.H. Fairoos of the KoralaiPattu west (Ottamavadi) Pradeshiya Sabha and A. Asfar of the Ninthavur Pradeshiya Sabha. Both members were issued formal suspension letters on July 3.
The disciplinary move comes after the two councillors accepted chairmanship positions in their respective councils, defying the party’s decision. It was further noted that both individuals allegedly aligned with the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and secured their posts with the full backing of that party, thus acting against the mandate given to them by the electorate under the ACMC.
The ACMC stated that this conduct not only undermines party unity but also disregards the democratic choice of the voters who elected them under the ACMC banner.
