President Gotabaya Rajapaksa leaves for Singapore from Maldives

(UTV | COLOMBO) – President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who landed in the Maldives last morning has left the country to Singapore.

Maldivian media reports say President Rajapaksa left the Velana International Airport a short while ago in a Saudi Airlines flight (SV788) bound for Singapore.

The flight is scheduled to land in Singapore around 7pm local time. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is reportedly still in the Maldives.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his wife and two other security personnel left for the Maldives in a plane belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force last morning.

Early this morning, it was reported that the Head of State had not left for Singapore from Male on a previously planned flight.

The news agency reported President Rajapaksa had planned to leave from Male to Singapore last night on flight SQ437.

However, it reported that President Rajapaksa did not travel on the flight as planned due to security issues.

Meanwhile, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to announce his resignation once he lands in Singapore later today.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is currently discharging duties as the country’s Acting President.
