Rail trade unions call off strike

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Railway trade union representatives have decided to call off a strike action that was launched yesterday (6).

Railway controllers, yard workers, and engine drivers engaged in a two-day strike action demanding fuel in order to report to work.

During a round of discussions last evening with Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardana, railway authorities, and trade union representatives, the Secretary of the Transport Ministry vowed to formulate a programme to provide fuel for employees of the Railway Department.

The trade union representatives said considering the promises by the Secretary, a decision was reached to suspend the strike action.

Accordingly, trade union representatives stated that railway operations will function as per usual from today (7).

Only 50 among the 280 scheduled train journeys functioned yesterday.
