(UTV | COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka Police has encouraged cyclists to wear a helmet at all times to minimize serious injuries.
Speaking during a media briefing at the Department of Government Information today, DIG in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety Indika Hapugoda said motorists should also be mindful of cyclists on roads especially at night.
DIG Indika Hapugoda noted cyclists should have proper lights fixed at the front and rear of the bicycle and must be clad in bright coloured clothing.
He said cyclists should abide by road rules and according to the Motor Traffic Law, they should also keep to the left of the road.
DIG Indika Hapugoda noted that a number of road accidents have been reported when turning to right or left and therefore it is important that cyclists also abide by roads signs and traffic lights.
He also requested other motorists not to drive recklessly given the increase in bicycles on roads.
President of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva says bicycles have become the go to vehicle at present as the country is facing a fuel crisis.
Speaking at the media briefing held at the Department of Government Information today, Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva noted that even those own luxury vehicles are leaving their cars and SUVs behind and commuting to work and to their business premises by bicycles.
He said therefore they want to send a clear message to the motorists to let cyclists to use the road.
Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva said cycling is a cost-effective mode of transport which also benefits the individuals physically and mentally.
He noted that nearly USD 50 to 52 million is required to bring down a fuel shipment whereas with that amount all Sri Lankans can be provided with a bicycle.
Dr. de Silva added that cycling is a big boost for the economy going forward.
He said therefore in order to encourage people to take up cycling, they have organized a cycle rally from Wijerama, Colombo to Peliyagoda on Saturday.
