Supreme Court rules on Surcharge Tax Bill

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Supreme Court has determined that the proposed Surcharge Tax Bill is in line with the Constitution.

During the commencement of this morning’s Parliamentary session, Deputy Speaker of House Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said the determination of the Surcharge Tax Bill which was challenged in the Supreme Court was directed to the Speaker of House.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court has determined that neither the Bill nor any of its provisions is inconsistent with Article 12 or Article 13 of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court has informed the Speaker that the Surcharge Tax Bill can be passed by a simple majority in Parliament.
