“UNHRC cannot influence decision to release prisoners”

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa says that the present government will not let the United Nations Human Rights Council or other international forces influence decisions on prisoners.

Speaking to media after a function in Ambalangoda, the Minister said the UNHRC will not face issues when prisoners are released in Sri Lanka.

He noted that the President has also promised rehabilitation of prisoners in his policy statement.

Minister Rajapaksa noted that the administration plans to reduce congestion in prisons and release long-term prisoners who are being held without a trial.

He assured that prisoners will be observed independently and given the Presidential pardon.

The Minister stressed that many countries are opposing Sri Lanka for ending the reign of terrorism, where they will always bring up allegations against the state.
