(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Army troops are still involved in the relief operations in Meetotamulla, Department of Government Information said.
Accordingly Army’s Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Response Squadron together with Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLR & DC) and other technical experts are continuously engaged in building a solid soil-bund around the garbage dump, draining underneath polluted water, laying hume pipes as a drainage system and closely monitoring emission of methane gas at the collapsed area.
Army troops also covered the garbage dump with Polythene to ensure safety in the area and also drained the collected water underneath the garbage dump. Troops also laid more than 150 drain pipes as a prolong initiative to eliminate water collecting under the garbage dump.
Preventive and precautionary measures with regard to the incident were also reviewed at a meeting held on Sunday (30th April). Senior army officers, foreign officials, Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau officials, Disaster Management Centre officials, Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation officials attended the meeting.
