Railway drivers and operators on strike from noon

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Railway Controllers’ Association says railway operations will be hampered by an indefinite strike action that is due to be launched at noon today.

The Railway Drivers and Controllers Association will withdraw from services at 12pm.

However, Secretary of the Association Manura Peiris said trains that are currently in operation will come to a halt after completing journeys.

Peiris attributed the strike action to arbitrary decisions of the railway administration.

He said the leave process was not duly enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic adding that 80 employees were dismissed arbitrarily during this period.

He claimed that while state sector workers were granted concessions owing to the coronavirus, certain railway employees were terminated.

He added a tender process was initiated in violation of protocol for a communication and ticket system with large sums spent on this project.

Manura Peiris said a committee was also appointed to look into the matter.

The Association accordingly called on the Minister of Transport and relevant officials to ensure these incidents are addressed.
