FTZ Union ready to massive strike

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Free Trade Zones & General Services Employees Union says if salaries of the private sector are not increased through the 2022 Budget, they will be compelled to stage a strike.

Joint Secretary of the Union Anton Marcus said it is unfortunate that Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa failed to make any statements pertaining to salary increment for apparel sector workers.

He said while the rest of the country was forced to stay at home during the COVID-19 crisis, those part of the apparel industry worked tirelessly to earn valuable US dollars for the country.

Anton Marcus noted that the present government through the budget has provided tax relief and concessions to big businesses and investors but has forgotten the working class.

Anton Marcus said since the budget will be debated for a few weeks, they expect the government to make a statement on private sector salary.

He said if the government failed to provide any answers to their demands, they will rally the unions and stage a massive strike.
