(UTV | COLOMBO) – A number of trade unions from various sectors have decided to stage a series of protests today centred around Colombo against the move to hand over shares of the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi power plant to an American company.
Trade unions representing the energy, petroleum, and ports sectors have announced that the trade union struggle against the government’s efforts of selling national resources to foreign powers will commence at noon today.
Speaking during a media briefing today, trade unionist Ananda Palitha said protests will be staged opposite the headquarters of the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Colombo Harbour, and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Kolonnawa Storage Terminal.
Ananda Palitha warned the government that the struggle against the sale of national resources to foreign powers including the transfer of shares of the Yugadanavi Power Plant will be staged across the country.
He said all union action will be halted if the government takes a step back in its current course of action.
He said today begins the era of protecting the country’s resources adding they will not let the government halt their action through the issuance of Gazette Notifications.
Palitha said they will utilise all available trade union assets to oppose the move.
He said they will not step back from union action under any circumstance.
