Landslide warnings issued in eight districts

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Landslide warnings have been issued in eight districts due to heavy rains.

The National Building Research Organization said landslide warnings were issued for several Divisional Secretariats in the Badulla, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura Districts.

It will be in effect until 6pm today.

The NBRO said residents of these areas must remain vigilant over landslide warnings.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director and Media Spokesman of the Disaster Management Center, Pradeep Kodippili said the public should remain vigilant regarding landslide warnings issued in Passara in the Badulla District and several areas in the Kegalle District.

He said a reduction of rainfall was reported from several areas adding however showers are expected in several areas today.

Pradeep Kodippili said showers were reported in several areas in the central hills, and sluice gates of several reservoirs have been opened.

He noted the sluice gates of the Kala Wewa, Rajanganaya reservoir, Deduru Oya and Kukule Ganga were accordingly opened.

He added inundation was reported in several areas as well.

Kodippili noted the sluice gates of the Udawalawe Reservoir may be opened today as it is reaching capacity.

He also urged residents living along Kumbukkan Oya to remain vigilant.
