Special operation to enforce inter provincial travel restrictions

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Police say a special operation will commence, beginning today to enforce inter provincial travel restrictions island wide, including at entry and exit points to Districts and highways.

Instructions have been issued to officers on duty at checkpoints to conduct thorough inspections of individuals who attempt to cross provincial borders during the long weekend.

Police request the public to refrain from organising pilgrimages or trips in a manner that violates inter provincial travel restrictions during the upcoming long weekend, in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Police said individuals who are found violating restrictions will be severely dealt by the law. Officers have been instructed to inspect number plates on vehicles parked at religious landmarks, holiday destinations and beaches to identify if the owner has violated travel restrictions to arrive at the destination.

The Sri Lanka Police has also informed intelligence units to assist Police officers on conducting investigations over enforcing travel restrictions.

Police urge the public to stay at home during the weekend and follow guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile the government has decided to enforce strict travel restrictions island wide.

Issuing a statement, the Government Information Department said such a decision was taken in order to protect the progress made in controlling the spread of coronavirus.
