(UTV | COLOMBO) – Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe raised concerns in Parliament on Monday (04) over the arrest and detention of Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen.
“MP Rishad Bathiudeen is being detained. If there is evidence against MP Rishad, file a case. If there is no evidence, release him. If a Member of Parliament (MP) is detained, there should be charges against him. Ask the Attorney General (AG) about the action that will be taken with regard to the MP.
“The MP, who is being held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), is now holding due to chargers related to another case. If there is such evidence, present it. MP Rishad was detained by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the time over chargers related to a different case due to which he is currently in custody. If a Member of this House gets involved in a case, it is a major issue. If there is evidence in that regard, inform Parliament. Submit the evidence presented to the Magistrate to this House as well.
“Part of the Commission’s Report has not been submitted. Submit the full Report to Parliament. Reveal to Parliament the steps to be taken regarding MP Rishad,” Parliamentarian Ranil added.
