Seventeen killed due to inclement weather

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The inclement weather has claimed the lives of 17 people as of this morning (07), the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) stated.

The DMC said that the victims include five residents from Kegalle, and 3 each from Gampaha, Puttalam, and Ratnapura.

The DMC also said that five people have sustained injuries and two people are still missing.

According to the DMC 26,806 people have been affected by the inclement weather.

Sri Lanka has been experiencing heavy rain, strong winds, floods and landslides over the past few days.

The DMC said that 17 houses have been fully destroyed as a result of the inclement weather while 978 houses have been damaged.

The inclement weather has affected 10 districts around the country.

The military has been deployed in the search and rescue operations and to offer assistance to the affected families.
