“Avatar” overtakes “Avengers” at Box-Office

(UTV | COLOMBO) – James Cameron’s “Avatar” has once again become the highest-grossing film of all time at the Global Box Office.

A re-release in China on Friday (12) saw the 2009 film make USD 12.3 million in its first 2-days – pushing it past the just over USD 7 million it required to surpass “Avengers: Endgame” at the Global Box-Office.

As of now, “Avatar” has snagged USD 2.802 billion worldwide – a number that is expected to go higher in the coming days. As both “Avatar” and Marvel fall under the Disney banner now, the competition between the pair feels considerably less. In the tradition of this record being broken, Marvel has sent out a graphic congratulating Avatar for re-taking the crown.

Avatar Producer Jon Landau has issued a statement in the wake of the news, saying “We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theatres during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support. We are hard at work on the next Avatar films and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come.”

Disney currently has the first of four planned “Avatar” sequels scheduled for 16 December, 2022.
