Eastern troops swoop on illegal sand mining

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Troops of 4 Special Forces serving the Security Forces in the East swooped on a group of people, engaged in illegal sand mining in the general river area in Ella Kantale and apprehended their vehicles and tools.

On seeing the arrival of troops, those suspects abandoned their tools and tractors and ran away from the scene. Those vehicles and tools were delivered to the Serunuwara Police Station for further onward actions and investigations.

On a Presidential directive, respective Police stations have been instructed to receive the support of ground troops for such raids in a move to curb antisocial activities. Accordingly, General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army instructed respective Security Force Commanders and under command troops to carry out such work in coordination with the Police.
