The long delayed Robert De Niro comedy “The War With Grandpa,” which was originally going to hit cinemas in 2018, has become the first film to knock Chris Nolan’s “Tenet” off the top spot at the box-office.
The widely panned film, about the battle between a septuagenarian and his grandson, grossed $3.6 million at the domestic box-office – helped by the fact it’s the first wide release film since “Tenet” and potentially the only one that will come to cinemas before Christmas (depending upon if “The Croods: The New Age” sticks to Thanksgiving).
The number marks the worst performance for a #1 film at the box office since 1988, further kicking the already down exhibition industry. In its sixth week of release, “Tenet” grossed $2.1 million domestically – pushing its U.S. haul to $48.3 million.
Overseas, where the pandemic is flaring up again in numerous countries, it pulled in a further estimated $9.8 million globally. Its worldwide total to date is a quite solid $323.3 million considering the circumstances.
Disney’s re-release of “Hocus Pocus” pulled in a further $1.2 million, while Sony’s limited release aspiring Filipino musician drama “Yellow Rose” pulled just $150,000 from 900 screens.
