Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his Marvel magical hero role of Doctor Strange for the upcoming third “Spider-Man” film starring Tom Holland and being produced by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
Cumberbatch will effectively take over the mentor role that was previously occupied by Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the two previous films.
How this will work isn’t clear. “Spider-Man 3” is due to begin shooting in Atlanta in the next week or so, while Cumberbatch is about to begin shooting the “Doctor Strange” sequel “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” in London.
Due to the restrictions on travel and such, at present it’s unclear when and where the UK-based Cumberbatch will shoot his scenes for the “Spider-Man” sequel. He joins the also cast Jamie Foxx returning to a variation on the role of Electro he played in 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” along with current film returnees Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Tony Revolori and Jacob Batalon.
Jon Watts is helming the new film which Sony has dated for December 17th 2021.
