Eight females elected to the ninth Parliament

UTV | COLOMBO – Eight females have been elected to the ninth Parliament at the 2020 General Election.

Three of them were elected from the Ratnapura District, including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna candidates Pavithra Wanniarachchi and Muditha Soysa and Samagi Jana Balawegaya contestant Thalatha Athukorale.

Rajika Wickramasinghe, who contested from the SLPP in the Kegalle District, also claimed a seat in Parliament.

Sudarshini Fernandopulle and Kokila Gunawardena were elected to Parliament from the Gampaha District.

Geetha Kumarasinghe, contesting from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, was elected from the Galle District.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya candidate, Rohini Kavirathna, was elected to Parliament from the Matale District.

Former Minister of Women’s Affairs Chandrani Bandara, Former MPs Hirunika Premachandra, Thusitha Wijemanne, Vijayakala Maheswaran, Anoma Gamage, Sriyani Wijewickrama and Sumedha G Jayasena were unable to claim wins at the 2020 election.

Female representation during the 2015-2020 Parliament was at 5.3% with 12 female Members of Parliament representing the eighth Parliament.
