Angulana unrest: 14 suspects arrested

UTV | COLOMBO – Eight Police personnel are reported to have sustained injuries in the unrest which broke out opposite the Angulana Police station yesterday.

Police stated that 14 individuals were arrested over the incident, while five males and nine females are among the group arrested.

The suspects will be produced before the Moratuwa Magistrates Court today, while they will face criminal charges relating to mob action and attacking Police and damage to property.

Riot Police fired tear gas to disperse a group of protesters opposite the Police Station yesterday, who were demanding a just investigation into the shooting in the area by Police that led to the death of a fisherman.

Area residents had hurled stones at the Police Station during the unrest.

The Police Station sign and several vehicles and property were damaged during the incident.

A 39-year-old fisherman died in Police gunfire around 11:45pm last Friday night in Angulana.

The individual’s post-mortem examination revealed he was shot in the head.

A Police Sergeant, a Constable and a Constable Driver were interdicted over the confrontation.
